Imaginations of the Future: utopian past and future dreams

University of Manchester English literature third year work

Imaginations of the Future

This site showcases work by third year undergraduates at the University of Manchester, from the course Imaginations of the Future, taught by Dr Ingrid Hanson. The course considers British and global utopias from the Victorian fin-de-siècle, including newspaper publications from late C19 socialist and anarchist newspapers.

As part of the course we visit the wonderful Working Class Movement Library in Salford to look at nineteenth-century newspapers, magazines, handbills and advertisements related to utopia, and the Zine Library, also in Salford, to look at zines, both present day and historical. Other wonderful contributors to the course have included Alex Alberda, Curator of Indigenous Perspectives at Manchester Museum, and Vic Turnbull of the award-winning Mic Media.
